Focus on the Saturn/Uranus opposition aspect on Election Day 2008:

Emphasis has been placed on the 'opposing forces' representative of these two powerful planets. This is, in part, due to the natural differences ascribed to the nature of the planets themselves.

Saturn represents duration through time, the building of structures, solidifying and giving form to matter, and a profound reluctance to change. Uranus is associated with the energy for sudden action, brilliant flashes of insight, universality, revolution and dramatic change.

The exact opposition aspect between these two planets, made all the more significant due to the rarity of the occurrence of this opposition coming once in 45 years, adds to the somber mood and expectation of a sudden shift of energy with explosive consequences.

There is another view of the opposition aspect as an energy exchange between the planets affected, and that is the 'full moon' aspect of two planets in opposition, which in the nature of buddhic consciousness, 'reflect' the energies of the other in a process leading to 'enlightenment'. It is said when Buddha obtained enlightenment, both the Sun and the Moon could be seen in the sky. A sign of balance and integration.

This opposition of Saturn and Uranus could be viewed in this light - as that of an opportunity to reflect deeply upon the opposing forces of duration and structure building, and the forces inviting change and innovation. These energies do not necessarily portend a violent clash and lack of constructive resolution.

The Saturn/Uranus opposition is accompanied by the placement of other planets and aspects in supporting roles on Election Day 2008, and present an interesting and unique configuration in support of just such a confluence of energies toward a more creative and constructive expression and outcome.

New Moon in Scorpio

The Lunation cycle a week before the 2008 election begins in a few hours - a new Moon in Scorpio.

This New Moon falls in the 3rd House of the 2008 Election chart indicating much activity, getting out and about, learning new things and taking on new projects close to home, communicating with others.

This describes an atmosphere of 'getting out the vote' efforts which will be in high gear throughout the week.

Election Day 2008 Aspects

The focus has been on the Saturn/Uranus Opposition on election day. Here are the complex patterns of other aspects which will blend into the energy focus on Nov 4th, and which mitigate, through trines and sextiles, the negative aspects of this historic opposition:

Trines, sextiles and Void of Course Moon?

Beginning in September, the planets will be lining up in a bucket, or bowl pattern, with all the planets occupying one half of the zodiac with the faster moving Moon moving out into a 'handle' pattern and causing agitation every two weeks. This is a configuration which hasn't happened since Spring of 2001. This bowl pattern is lead by Saturn at one edge and Uranus at the other.

Astrologer John Townley:

"When the Moon is inside the bowl, we return to Saturn-led bowl chart order, and when the Moon is outside of the bowl, our satellite becomes the wildly emotional handle of a bucket chart, and everybody gets crazy. September proved to be uncannily on time, as Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy was announced just when the Moon passed Uranus (surprise!) on 9/14 and broke into the open. All hell broke loose and the world economy went nuts for two weeks until the Moon finished her crazy trek and tucked herself back into the bowl with the conjunction to Saturn on 9/28 and the accompanying massive bail-out bill – the first version of which itself failed, from being introduced on a terminally old Moon, but will eventually in some form put things temporarily back on firmer footing.

The Moon, associated with mass behavior (hysterical or otherwise) is very much the focus as we move back into another similar round in October. The weekend of October 11-12 opens up the next round (two weeks of various panicky forms of “October surprise”), which then closes with the weekend of October 25-26, as again only one-half of the sky is inhabited until after the election. As we also pointed out, Pluto headed for its momentous sign change and the Saturn-Uranus opposition (the edges of the bowl) becoming exact on U.S. election day November 4 also give an extra feeling of ground-swell change, within which we all have little room to steer, [in] the “following sea”.

Imagine yourself on a ship in heavy weather – when you’re on deck, it seems like chaos (Moon outside the bowl) but when you go below it feels so much cozier and safer, but you know it’s really not. Go up for air again, if you’re getting a little seasick, and the whole experience repeats. Get used to it, because that will be the rhythm for the next few months and into mid-February, after which the Sun and inner planets begin to spread out of the bowl for a six-month hiatus, before it begins all over again. It’s the pumping rhythm of major change, whether it’s the kind you want to believe in or not…"

Within this bowl pattern, on Election Day, there are some interesting patterns which provide a stable base of support of the tensions of the Saturn/Uranus opposition.

There is a grouping of two 'close pairs', Sun/Mars in Scorpio, and Jupiter/Moon in Capricorn which are sextile (growth) each other, and which are configured in trine (flowing) aspects to Saturn (Jupiter/Moon), and to Uranus (Sun/Mars).

The Sun/Mars pair bring the energies of focused intent and energy, and that of Jupiter/Moon, expanded responsibility and engagement of 'the people'/Public.

With these crisscrossing trines, and sextiles, there will be a more measured build up and release of the tension of the Saturn/Uranus opposition. These helping aspects may portend the effect will be one of major change, but not of shocking disconnect.
